After sales recorded a marked decline in 2020, particularly in the foodservice channel, as Japan was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to contain its spread, positive growth was recorded in 2021, although sales levels remain below where they were prior to the pandemic.
Label-free packaging is on the rise, meaning that manufacturers are using less plastic to label their products. Key beverage companies have been promoting label-free packaging in their core brands, specifically for sales through the e-commerce channel.
Metal beverage cans were negatively affected in Japan as a lot of can sales in soft drinks in this country are made through vending machines, and vending machines saw very little use during the various COVID-19 outbreaks. With vending machines mostly found in institutions and busy areas in the city, these saw much lower levels of footfall due to restrictions introduced to try and control the spread of the virus.
The overall soft drinks packaging market is expected to see positive growth throughout the forecast period, although it will slow significantly towards its end. The trend of avoiding vending machines seen in the pandemic, due to health reasons as a result of many other people using them, but also as a result of less footfall in the areas such machines tend to be located, is expected to have a negative impact on metal beverage can usage over the forecast period.
PET bottles are expected to continue growing, with the image of this pack type improving as manufacturers of PET bottles work towards incorporating rPET into their bottles and other sustainable initiatives are pursued, such as label-free packaging. The shift towards rPET will continue, as manufacturers respond to increasing pressure to minimise their environmental footprints.
