Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Germany, alcoholic drinks packaging sales collapsed in the on-trade in 2020, also meaning that total unit volumes slipped into decline in this year. This was the direct result of measures implemented during lockdown, when restaurants, clubs, bars and cafés were closed.
The packaging unit volumes of metal beverage cans used in beer continued to increase and gain share in this product area in 2021. Discounters in particular are relying on aluminium and tinplate cans for the beer that they sell.
Although the glass bottle might be losing share in beer, it is still the dominant pack type. Glass bottles tend to not only fit well in the hand, but also protect the drink in the best possible way.
Increasing demand for and development of sustainable packaging is expected to be seen over 2021-2026. Reusable glass bottles save around 50% CO2 compared to disposable containers and can be refilled up to 50 times.
There was no major rebound in on-trade unit volume sales in alcoholic drinks in 2021, despite many on-trade facilities, such as bars and restaurants, reopening their doors for much of the year after the initial lockdowns. Some restrictions were still in place for parts of the year, particularly in its earlier months, while some consumers remaining cautious about socialising in public, and others had been negatively impacted by the pandemic.
