There was a strong rebound in the packaging unit volumes used for alcoholic drinks through the on-trade in 2021, with the off-trade also continuing to record positive, if slightly slower, growth in this year. This followed a year in which COVID-19 restrictions resulted in a slump in on-trade sales in 2020, due to the extended closure of establishments in this channel.
Consumers, especially younger ones, continued to demonstrate heightened awareness of sustainability issues in 2021. As a result, many manufacturers have been introducing products in environmentally-friendly packaging to appeal to such sensibilities among Italian consumers.
Although RTDs recorded a marginal decline in its packaging unit volumes in 2021, this followed a dynamic performance in 2020. In addition, while glass bottles, main pack type, was declining in 2021, all the other pack types were continuing to see strong growth in this product area.
Over the forecast period, packaging trends are expected to be even more strongly driven by sustainability concerns, eg increased usage of recycled materials and returnable packaging. This will also be driven by the implementation of a plastic tax in the country in 2021, which promises more moves in this direction, such as the reduction in use of single-use aluminium cans and increased recycling.
A relatively significant trend in terms of packaging is the popularisation of smaller formats, such as 375ml glass bottles, driven partly by increased concerns over alcohol and calorie intake. This also supported a preference for quality over quantity.
