The high-income expatriate and tourist populations in the United Arab Emirates have long sustained the alcoholic drinks market in the country, since the Muslim locals abstain from consuming alcohol. As a result, the local market holds great potential in terms of non-alcoholic beverages, with non-alcoholic drinks registering positive growth in 2022, which is expected to continue over the forecast period.
Dubai, the most populous of the United Arab Emirates, announced a scrapping of its 30% tax on alcohol sales at the start of 2023, at the same time announcing the removal of the need for consumers to purchase a liquor licence to enable them to purchase alcohol from retail outlets (the licence was not needed for purchasing alcohol in foodservice outlets). While foodservice consumption will remain prominent, this will likely provide a boost to retail consumption, which will, in turn, benefit packaging unit volume sales of the dominant pack types in this channel – glass bottles and metal beverage cans.
