Total alcoholic drinks packaging recorded healthy growth in 2020, despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. On-trade unit volumes plummeted, due to cafés, pubs and restaurants all being closed for extended periods in 2020, and, even after reopening, social distancing measures and consumer caution regarding the COVID-19 virus were still constraining customer numbers in on-trade outlets.
The RTDs product area has had a “good” pandemic, with double-digit percentage growth in its packaging unit volumes in both 2020 and 2021. While glass bottles remains the main pack type in this category, metal beverage cans have been registering particularly strong growth in RTDs in both 2020 and 2021.
Rising sustainability concerns and growing consumer consciousness about the impact of packaging on the environment has pushed one of the leading supermarkets in the country, Tesco, to become the first major retailer to scrap soft plastic rings and shrinkwrap packaging from all beers and ciders in its UK stores. It is thought that this will lead to 50 million fewer pieces of unrecycled plastic being produced every year.
A shift towards more environmentally-friendly packaging will continue to be seen over the forecast period, with UK consumers increasingly concerned about the impact of packaging on the environment, particularly the marine environment. The shift by Heineken and Diageo from plastic to paper for multipack packaging is expected to become the norm in the industry during the forecast period.
Craft beer manufacturers like to take an unconventional approach to packaging, trying to make the pack vibrantly attractive to tell the brand’s story through it. Metal beverage cans enable this element in a much easier format than glass bottles.
