The outbreak of COVID-19 in the Netherlands led to declining unit volumes of alcoholic drinks packaging in 2020. This decline was mainly the result of government measures implemented to close restaurants, clubs, bars and cafés for extended periods in the country.
Beer is one of the major categories within alcoholic drinks and, within beer, there has been a general shift away from glass bottles towards metal beverage cans. Lager in particular has been seeing increasing use of metal beverage cans for its packaging.
Although metal beverage cans are gaining ground in the packaging of sparkling wine, this is from a small base, with glass bottles continuing to be the dominant pack type for this product. Manufacturers tend to prefer to package sparkling wine in glass bottles as glass keeps out oxygen, which helps the alcoholic beverage age over time.
Sustainability is a major theme in alcoholic drinks packaging, with all the major retailers having announced ambitious sustainability goals for the forecast period. This means that these retailers are looking for alcoholic drinks companies to take responsibility and develop new packaging in order to help realise these plans.
Relatively slow year-on-year growth is expected for the total packaging unit volumes in the long term, once the market has fully recovered from the impact of the pandemic, because of reduced consumption of alcoholic drinks. According to a survey conducted by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) during the pandemic, the percentage of people classified as binge drinkers fell by 1.
