Executive Summary

Aug 2019
PROSPECTS
Metal beverage cans the big winner in beer and cider/perry in 2018

Metal beverage cans registered huge growth in 2018 and this was almost entirely due to significant increases in unit volumes in beer and, to a lesser degree, cider/perry. Smaller can sizes such as 330ml and 355ml were the biggest winners during the year as brands increasingly favoured these sizes of cans, which are easier and lighter to carry, have lower retail selling prices and, crucially in a warm country like Hong Kong, ensure that the beverage is finished before it becomes too warm to be enjoyable.

Glass bottles sees a migration towards smaller pack sizes

Smaller sizes of glass bottles registered impressive growth over the course of 2018, particularly in wine, where 189ml and 350ml glass bottles were the best performing pack types and sizes during the year. This was particularly noticeable in the on-trade, where consumers are increasingly interested in buying wine in bottles that contain enough for one glass (189ml) or two glasses (350ml), rather than buying an entire bottle, which is often considered to be too much for one person to consume in one sitting.

The thirst for tap beer poses a threat to beer packaging in the on-trade

Trade sources have noted that a huge shift towards tap beer is underway in Hong Kong’s bars and restaurants. As increasing numbers of on-trade establishments are now installing beer taps, demand is slowly shifting away from bottled beer and towards tap beer.
