On-trade closures had a major impact on on-trade sales in 2020, with sales of alcoholic drinks packaging slumping in this channel in this year. This had followed a year in which on-trade sales had already seen a marked decline due to the anti-government protests often resulting in the shutdown of on-trade establishments.
At the end of 2020, the Chinese government imposed heavy tariffs on wine imports. This effectively cut off its biggest overseas wine supplier, Australia, by introducing swingeing import duties on products coming from this country.
Smaller pack sizes like 330ml/335ml packaged in metal beverage cans in beer, primarily designed for individual consumption, have been attracting increasing consumer attention. Consumers who are looking for on-the-go consumption or convenience or want to try out different products/flavours opt for these smaller-portioned beverage cans.
Due to rising concerns surrounding sustainability and the ill-effects of non-recyclable material on the environment, manufacturers and consumers alike are turning towards more environmentally-friendly pack types. This is therefore expected to boost the usage of easily recyclable pack types like glass bottles and metal beverage cans over 2021-2026.
Although the on-trade has been recovering since 2021, it will take until 2023 for this channel to reach the unit volumes it was seeing prior to the protests and the pandemic. Both the protests and the pandemic encouraged greater use of the e-commerce channel for purchases of alcoholic drinks among local consumers.
