Glass bottles continued to lose share to metal beverage cans in both beer packaging and alcoholic drinks packaging as a whole in 2021. Metal beverage cans are seen as having a wide range of advantages, including lower initial investment, overall cost savings, better safety and greater convenience.
Glass bottles continues to be the dominant pack type used in the packaging of wine in Canada, and has also continued to see increasing unit volumes in recent years. In 2020, Ardagh Group, North America, a subsidiary of Ardagh Group, a packaging manufacturer offering sustainable packaging solutions, supplied Arterra Wines, an alcoholic beverage brand based in Canada, with a lightweight 1.
Within the pack types used in the packaging of tequila and mezcal, glass bottles still accounts for the majority of unit volumes. Manufacturers favour glass bottles over PET bottles, as, unlike glass bottles, the latter packaging format is susceptible to oxidation.
On 22 June 2022, the Canadian government published the Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations that intend to ban single-use plastic products. As per this new regulation, the manufacture, import, export and sale of single-use plastics such as ring carriers, straws etc will be banned by the end of 2025.
Within the pack types used in the packaging of dark beer, the unit volumes of metal beverage cans are expected to continue gaining share over 2021-2026, having already overtaken glass bottles as the main pack type towards the end of the review period. More manufacturers are expected to be choosing metal beverage can packaging over glass bottles as cans are significantly lighter and more robust than glass bottles, thereby offering greater convenience to both producers and end users.
