The strict lockdown in spring 2020 in Spain due to the COVID-19 outbreak required the closure of all on-trade establishments, which had a major impact on volume sales of alcoholic drinks and its packaging in the on-trade in 2020 as a whole. This was further exacerbated by the drop in inbound tourism over the summer, with the on-trade losing almost a third of its unit volumes in 2020.
Although 2021 proved to be an exception, metal beverage cans has been gaining share in RTDs, and spirit-based RTDs in particular, in recent years, with this expected to be seen again after 2021. This pack type has been receiving impetus from recent new launches, including Brown-Forman’s Jack Daniel's Lynchburg Lemonade in a 330ml can (and glass bottle), Pernod Ricard España’s Malibu Piña Colada in a 250ml can and Distribuciones Gómez Santofimia’s Cuba Libre in 350ml cans.
Within the pack types used in the packaging of flavoured/mixed lager, the volumes of metal beverage cans – already the main pack type – recorded strong growth in 2021. The other two pack types are glass bottles, which saw much slower growth in 2021, and PET bottles, which continued to decline.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important – while the trend had been more visible in soft drinks, consumers are also beginning to look for it in alcoholic drinks as well. This trend is shaping the beer category, for example, as the increasing presence of metal beverage can packaging in the market and the announcement by some of the main international and domestic players that they are developing more sustainable multipack formats to replace plastic rings shows they are responding to the growing concerns about sustainability.
Glass bottles are expected to continue dominating the packaging unit volumes used in categories like spirits and wine. In brandy and cognac, for example, glass bottles will continue to be the dominant pack type.
