Unlike other European countries, Sweden did not impose major lockdown restrictions on households and businesses due to COVID-19, instead advising its citizens to observe social distancing measures, limit travel and avoid major gatherings in public places. Nevertheless, these, as well as other measures imposed on on-trade outlets, led to reduced footfall in bars and restaurants, contributing to a decline in on-trade alcoholic drinks sales in 2020, and therefore also a big fall in packaging unit volumes in this channel, with kegs one of the hardest hit pack types.
Glass bottle unit volumes returned to positive growth in 2021, albeit only just, having been in decline in 2020. However, with this pack type considered as being heavy and prone to breakage, particularly with consumers buying more drinks from off-trade outlets than usual in 2020, glass bottles have continued to lose share in alcoholic drinks packaging.
The packaging unit volumes of PET bottles used in white spirits continued to see strong growth in 2021. While demand was boosted in 2020 from the extra sales being made in the off-trade, PET bottles continued to see strong growth in spirits, even when overall packaging unit volumes saw a much-reduced increase.
RTDs offers further potential for expansion and growth in Sweden due to a general shifting in consumer habits towards lower ABV beverages, particularly among younger adults. New product launches could focus on the concept of hard seltzers offering exciting flavour profiles, while supporting the trend for options with a healthier positioning.
Sustainability, already an important trend in Sweden, has been given further impetus by the pandemic, with Swedish consumers becoming more conscious of the impact their purchasing decisions can have on the environment. As such, they increasingly expect the products they purchase to reflect that, which is pushing manufacturers of alcoholic drinks to adopt a more sustainable approach.
