Alcoholic Drinks Packaging in
Indonesia

Country Report

Executive Summary

Jul 2019
PROSPECTS
Glass remains the dominant primary packaging type in Indonesia

In 2018, glass remained the most widely used primary packaging type in Indonesia, especially within on-trade channels. While there has been an emergence of other pack types, including metal beverage cans in beer and cider/perry, the bulk of packaging is mainly in glass due to its perception that it best retains the taste quality.

Metal beverage cans record strong growth due to new beer product launches

In 2018, metal beverage cans recorded healthy growth, supported by an increasing number of product developments in flavoured/mixed lager, which tend to come in metal beverage cans. For example, both Anker Lychee by Delta Djakarta Tbk PT and Prost Spezi by Beverindo Indah Abadi PT were launched in 320ml metal beverage cans.

Bag-in-box packaging in wine records strong growth due to increasing availability

Wine in bag-in-box packaging recorded strong growth in 2018, due to the rising availability of 2,000ml and 3,000ml pack sizes in off-trade channels. Although the pack type remains small, its use is growing as more companies increase their distribution beyond food/drink/tobacco specialists into supermarkets and hypermarkets.
