The Indonesian alcoholic drinks industry was significantly impacted by both the measures imposed by the government to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country as well as the virus itself, which made consumers reluctant to leave home, even when permitted to do so. With sales of alcoholic beverages plummeting in 2020, packaging for these products lost almost a third of its total unit volumes.
While glass remained the most widely used primary packaging type in Indonesia in 2021, especially within the on-trade channel, metal beverage cans has continued to gain share in recent years, including in 2021. Metal beverage cans are particularly widely used in beer, in which this pack type continues to gain share from glass bottles, still the leading pack type.
In the face of increasing production costs and rising taxation levels, players in beer have been shrinking the primary packaging size. With the tax for type A alcoholic drinks having been increased recently, companies were reducing the 330ml beer packaging size to 320ml, but maintaining the same retail price.
Sustainable packaging is expected to become an increasingly important priority for Indonesian alcoholic drinks industry players over the coming years. As consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the damaging effects of plastic pollution on the environment and are therefore looking for brands that are planet-friendly in their operations, brand owners are expected to move in line with the sustainability trend.
Some alcoholic drinks categories, such as beer, cider and RTDs, were already having to contend with the increasing excise tax applied to Class A drinks with up to 5% alcohol content prior to the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. The measures to contain the spread of the virus, such as closures and lockdowns, then resulted in increased price sensitivity among many low- and middle-income consumers as a result of pay cuts and rising unemployment.
