Despite the established returnable system for beer glass bottles being characteristic of Argentina, metal packaging has emerged as the star packaging, driven by changing consumption and distribution patterns. Historically, the beer industry was highly concentrated in only one type and size of packaging, with this being dictated by the investment by industrial breweries in family-sized glass bottles.
In line with the premiumisation trend and the craft beer boom, consumers have become more quality conscious, demanding more complex flavour profiles. As a result, more than 200 new brewpubs were opened around the country at which consumers began to look for gourmet experiences and, in so doing, discovering the attractions of craft beers.
The consumption of spirits and wine was affected mainly by macroeconomics, which resulted in falling real salaries. Low- and middle-income consumers notably reduced their consumption of domestic brands, resulting in a notable declination in other whiskies, Dutch gin, other liqueurs, and bitters, which are available only in glass bottles.
