Glass bottles continued to dominate the packaging unit volumes used in domestic lager in 2021, and were also gaining share in this year, helping to keep them ahead of other pack types like metal beverage cans and PET bottles. Manufacturers tend to favour glass bottles as they are non-porous and non-toxic, which helps preserve the product’s integrity.
The packaging unit volumes of metal beverage cans used in flavoured/mixed lager continued to gain share in 2021, and move ever closer to the unit volume levels accounted for by the leading pack type of glass bottles. However, PET bottles was the most dynamic pack type in 2021.
Brandy and cognac was recording strong growth in 2021, primarily benefitting the unit volumes of the main pack type of glass bottles. Among the reasons for the strong growth in this product area is manufacturer activity, with some brand owners redesigning their packaging to attract more consumers.
Romania has laid the groundwork for the implementation of Sistemul de Garan?ie Returnare (SGR), or Return Guarantee System. This system is aimed at bringing the majority of packaged beverages, including alcoholic drinks, into the circular economy, which sees consumers getting back a pre-paid deposit after returning their packaging, post-consumption.
Total unit volume sales of alcoholic drinks packaging returned to positive growth in 2021, although the off-trade growth was much slower than a year earlier, with the start of the on-trade recovery helping drive overall unit volume sales in the Romanian alcoholic drinks industry. With both channels recording positive growth from 2021, a return to pre-pandemic packaging unit volumes is expected by 2024.
