The widespread closure of on-trade outlets in Switzerland during lockdown led to on-trade sales plummeting across all alcoholic drinks in 2020, resulting in a major decline in packaging unit volumes in this year. While some sales shifted into the off-trade channel, notably in beer, in other categories, such as RTDs, there was no visible transfer of consumption between the channels.
The closure of bars and restaurants for extended periods as part of the measures implemented to try and control the spread of the COVID-19 virus resulted in a steep decline in on-trade sales of alcoholic drinks packaging in Switzerland in 2020. Even when reopened, with social distancing and other hygiene measures in place as well as the lingering fear among many consumers of catching the virus, footfall was lower in on-trade establishments than in a normal year.
Metal beverage cans have been gaining popularity in wine as they offer a greater degree of convenience, while, at the same time, representing a newly designed packaging that often appears more modern than its more conservative counterpart, the glass bottle. Even during the pandemic, metal beverage cans has continued recording strong growth in wine, gaining further share from the other pack types.
Glass bottles and metal beverage cans are expected to lead the recovery across categories because of growing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable products and packaging. With consumers becoming more conscious of sustainability issues they view glass as a good option for the environment.
The ongoing trend towards low-alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks has continued to be seen in Switzerland, likely gaining further impetus during the pandemic, given the emphasis on health due to the presence of the COVID-19 virus. This trend was particularly evident in beer, with players, in response to this, launching a number of new products, including Coors Light, Feldschlösschen Alkoholfrei Weizen and Feldschlösschen Alkoholfrei Lager.
