As many Swiss consumers are already highly environmentally conscious, showing growing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable products and packaging, it comes as no surprise that recyclable and recycled packaging continued growing in significance. This was especially the case for multipack packaging made from paper or carton, such as baskets, which continued being favoured over plastic packaging.
Total volume sales of alcoholic drinks remained stagnant in Switzerland in 2019, while packing unit volume sales recorded modest growth. This was mainly due to the fact that the overall sales in litres remained the same, while the amount per portion became smaller.
As the plastics discourse continues to dominate consumers’ minds when it comes to sustainability, Switzerland has a high usage of metal cans, especially in beer. There is also a growing acceptance of this pack type in other categories, such as wine filled in metal cans.
The temporary closure of bars and restaurants in the first half of the year in Switzerland means that on-trade sales of alcoholic drinks packaging will decline sharply in 2020. Even when reopened, with social distancing and other hygiene measures in place as well as the lingering fear among many consumers of catching the virus, footfall will be lower in on-trade establishments than in a normal year.
On-trade sales of alcoholic drinks packaging will record a strong rebound, with dynamic growth, in 2021, pushing total sales growth back into the black, despite a fall in off-trade alcoholic drinks packaging in this year. Both channels will record positive annual growth throughout the rest of the forecast period, albeit with the off-trade generally close to stagnation, as sales return to normal levels on the back of normalisation of the economy and society.
