The Philippines took a number of measures to control the spread of COVID-19 that had a significant impact on sales of alcoholic drinks in the country. Firstly, the country imposed lockdown in much of the country, which included the closure of foodservice outlets, including bars and restaurants, as well as a ban on public gatherings.
The prevalence of returnable bottles in domestic lager was continuing to make glass bottles the most important type of packaging in the Philippines in the pre-pandemic period, with returnables generally gaining share from non-returnables over the review period. The bulk of alcoholic drinks packaging, particularly in domestic lager, spirits, wine and RTDs, comes in glass bottles, and, while AB Heineken Philippines and San Miguel Brewery offer products in metal beverage cans, there is still very strong consumer demand for their products in glass bottles.
There was an increasing variety of pack sizes becoming available in alcoholic drinks prior to the pandemic, highlighting the continual engagement of manufacturers with consumers. The demand for sake has made the variety of pack sizes even more fragmented in wine.
Given the major impact COVID-19 and the measures taken to contain its spread had directly on sales of alcoholic drinks in the Philippines, but also on the local economy, and therefore on consumers’ spending power, even as restrictions are lifted in the country, the recovery might not be as strong as hoped for, with sales not expected to return to 2019 levels until 2024. Both the on- and off-trade will be recording positive growth rates in their packaging unit volumes from 2021, but recovery will be a gradual process, not least giving pricing pressures due to global inflationary pressures.
Philippines-based brand Don Papa launched its new limited edition Sevillana Cask Finish in early 2020, coming in a limited edition run of just 60 bottles. The label on the packaging differentiated the product by maintaining an orange tone, showcasing images of oranges in a Rococo art style.
