Among the pack types used in the packaging of standard lager, metal beverage cans held the largest share in unit volume terms in 2021, and also continued to gain share from glass bottles in this year. Strong consumer demand for alcoholic drinks, labour shortages and increased production costs brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic have seen many glass manufacturers across the country temporarily halt their operations or reduce production levels, thereby resulting in a severe glass shortage in the market.
Another major reason for the shift away from glass bottles to alternative packaging choices during the pandemic was consumers ordering alcoholic drinks more through online retail channels as they were spending more time at home due to home seclusion and quarantines. This led to manufacturers shifting to PET bottles and other packaging alternatives that are more suited to last-mile delivery, ie with less risk of breakage than glass bottles as well as being lighter.
The COVID-19 pandemic has made people more concerned about their diets and their general health. This has helped to boost the demand for non-/low-alcohol beer as both of these beverages reduce the alcohol content consumed and are therefore considered as being healthier than drinking beer with a higher alcohol content, particularly non-alcoholic beer.
In Brazil, the importance of sustainability is rising. This will likely push alcoholic drinks companies to come up with sustainable packaging solutions.
Within the pack types used in the packaging of spirits, glass bottles will continue to account for the bulk of unit volumes over the forecast period. A significant factor that could benefit glass bottles in spirits in the next couple of years is the possible increase in demand for cachaça, a local distilled spirit that is the most consumed product in spirits in the country.
