Larger formats gained share in glass bottles within beer at the end of the review period, with sizes over 600ml seeing good growth. This was due to the success of large returnable bottles, with brands such as Tecate and Modelo expanding to offer even larger formats towards the end of the review period.
While pack sizes expanded in beer at the end of the review period, smaller packs saw a good performance in spirits, with 50-375ml glass bottles performing well in popular products such as tequila (and mezcal) and whiskies 2019. This trend was driven by the leading brands, who faced growing competition from economy brands at the end of the review period due to economic uncertainty and rising price-sensitivity.
Metal beverage cans continue to be mainly used for beer but are seeing good growth in RTDs and benefiting from strong new product development. Spirit-based RTDs brands Vina Real and Caribe Cooler notably launched new formats in metal beverage cans towards the end of the review period, having previously offered only glass bottles, with the aim of expanding their consumer base.
The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to hit total unit volume sales hard for alcoholic drinks packaging in 2020, with sales declining. This will however solely be due to decline in foodservice/on-trade unit volume.
Growth for alcoholic drinks packaging is expected to be more muted in the forecast period than during the review period in total unit volume terms. This will partly be due to a rise in health concerns in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, while economic uncertainty will also impact sales of alcoholic drinks in general, as consumers seek to economise.
