The COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on total unit volumes of alcoholic drinks packaging used in 2020, resulting in a marked fall in sales. This was mostly due to the steep decline in on-trade unit volumes in 2020, with this channel losing more than a third of its sales.
Metal beverage cans continued gaining share in the alcoholic drinks industry in 2021, a trend that is expected to continue for much of the forecast period. Reasons include convenience in transportation and storage for at-home consumption of beer.
While metal beverage cans continue to gain share, glass bottles still remains the main pack type in Mexican alcoholic drinks. Glass bottles still dominate wine and spirits sales, with glass packaging usually preferred to bottle such alcoholic beverages as it is non-toxic and impermeable, thereby maintaining the integrity of the product.
In 2021, companies were experiencing shortages in the supply of several key raw materials, including glass and cardboard, for packaging. Although this had not affected the availability of products at the time of writing, it may become a more serious challenge during the forecast period if the shortages continue.
The strong perception among Mexican consumers that cider is a drink that should be reserved for Christmas and New Year will continue to restrict the development of this category. Over the review period, the availability of cider through the on-trade channel was limited, with the Strongbow brand having the widest presence.
