The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to slow the spread of the virus had a major impact on alcoholic drinks packaging in 2020, with unit volumes seeing a slight decline in the off-trade and a major slump in the on-trade. While off-trade sales returned to positive growth in 2021, the unit volumes used in the on-trade were still in decline in 2021.
The Polish government introduced an increase in the excise on alcohol products of 10% from 1 January 2020. This meant a price increase of around PLN1.
The smaller pack sizes of 330ml and 500ml continue to account for the bulk of packaging unit volumes of glass bottles in stout, with these sizes preferred to the larger formats like 1,000ml and 2,000ml. Likewise, the 700ml pack size of glass bottles continues to dominate whiskies packaging unit volumes, with larger formats like 1,000ml, 1,500ml and 3,000ml seeing much smaller shares in whiskies.
The health and wellness trend is gaining popularity among the younger drinking population in Poland in particular, as they slowly shift away from or decrease the amount of alcohol they consume. The general health trend was also provided with further impetus by the pandemic.
The EU is pushing its Member States to enact laws to ban the use of single-use plastics. As a consequence, on 26 July 2022, the Polish government introduced a revised version of a draft bill to carry out the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive.
