Demand decreased significantly in 2021 after the spike recorded in 2020 in line with higher consumer expenditure on refrigeration appliances during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Consumers spent longer periods in the home due to lockdowns and home seclusion, the closure of schools and workplaces and strict limits on outdoor activities in general.
Liebherr-Hausgeräte Ochsenhausen (Liebherr brand) remains the leading player in refrigeration appliances in retail volume terms in 2021, due to its leadership of fridges and fridge freezers and second place in freezers, followed by BSH Hausgeräte (Siemens) and Miele. BSH Hausgeräte and Miele also benefit from a strong and wide presence across major categories of refrigeration appliances.
In March 2021, the EU’s energy labelling was updated, with the scale amended from A+++ to D to A to G. This attracted a lot of attention to the labelling and sustainability in general.
As a highly saturated category, especially after the spike in demand witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic, refrigeration appliances is expected to see stagnation in 2022 before returning to positive, but slow retail volume and value (constant 2021 prices) growth over the forecast period. However, such was the increase in sales in 2020 as consumers looked to improve and make their living experience more comfortable during lockdowns and home seclusion, that replacement purchases are set to be the backbone of demand.
Fridges saw some upturn in demand early in the pandemic, when consumers were looking for extra devices in order to have more storage capacity to cope with the increased need for food as they cooked and dined at home more often and for long periods. However, as the pandemic situation eases, fridges is expected to face a significant downward trend in demand in the forecast period, with consumers continuing to shift to the more space-efficient and cost-effective option of fridge freezers.
Fridge freezers is set to remain the most popular type in refrigeration appliances in Austria in the forecast period. The category is projected to gain retail volume and value share from freezers and, especially, fridges to account for around one half of retail volume sales and over one half of retail value sales of refrigeration appliances by the end of the forecast period.
