Vending in Denmark continued to see declining sales in 2021. This was mainly due to the new wave of COVID-19 early in the year which again closed shopping centres, department stores and gyms, and led to more people working from home and spending more time at home in general.
The vast majority of vending machines in Denmark remained the “traditional” type in 2021, with little in the way of technological innovation taking place in the channel. There has not, for instance, been any significant development towards more modern touch screen machines in the country due to the limited interest in vending as a whole.
Although in early 2021 there was again strong demand for anti-COVID-19 products, such as hydro-alcoholic gel, gloves, face masks and wipes, vending players again did not respond to this demand. Vending offerings in Denmark remained stagnant, and as pharmacies, drugstores and grocery stores, which have a wider network than vending machines in Denmark, remained opened during the new wave of COVID-19 infections, all such products remained widely throughout 2021.
As life returns to normal and consumers again go to work, the gym and socialise, sales of vending are expected to see a strong recovery in 2022 and 2023 to return to more normal levels.
Vending in Denmark has been slow to follow consumer demand and has not really responded to the change in consumers shopping habits, especially for convenience products. While convenience stores in Denmark have been quick to respond to consumer demand for more healthy products, vending players have been slow to follow the demand and most vending machines, except for those in gyms, continue to stock traditional vending products such as soft drinks, chocolate, chips and cheap sandwiches.
Following the expected positive correction at the start of the forecast period, vending sales are set to again decline in the latter part of the forecast period. Because of this and the increased competition from convenience players, it is unlikely that new players will enter the category or that the total number of vending machines will see any significant increase over the forecast period.
