The increasing popularity of convenience stores is acting as a drag on vending machine sales, impacting sales of both packaged food and non-alcoholic drinks through vending. Packaged food vending continued to decline in 2019, as did sales of hot drinks and tobacco through vending machines.
The health and wellness trend is impacting vending sales in two ways. Firstly, consumers are looking to eat or drink less of the unhealthy products that have typically been sold in vending machines.
US consumers are becoming increasingly accustomed to proximity payments across all industries and store formats, leading to user interface innovations for vending machines. With financial payments continuously evolving, vending machines are required to keep up with the rate at which store-based retailers advance with point-of-sale terminals.
Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, two of the major players in bottled water in the US, are working together to test a “fill your own bottle” vending machine scheme. They are installing such machines in workplaces and educational establishments to dispense chilled, filtered water, which can also carbonate or add flavour, but the user must bring their own bottle.
Various non-food companies, including cosmetics brands such as Benefit, apparel retailers such as Uniqlo or and drugstores such as CVS, are experimenting with vending machines in airports. While these sales are excluded from the Euromonitor International retailing channel definitions, if this vending model proves successful for such players in airports it could become a more mainstream phenomenon in the future.
Visa is lowering swipe fee rates for vending machines in the US in an effort to promote the use of Visa cards for these transactions. Vending machines have traditionally relied on cash payments, but recent innovations in payment methods for vending have emerged, including mobile payments.
