While vending retail value sales declined in 2021, vending machines gained attention in Japan in the review period, especially during COVID-19. Vending machines were considered a type of unmanned store, where consumers were able to purchase products without any human interaction.
Japan is the largest market for vending machines, and the country has been continuing to seek ways of effectively utilising their wide distribution to serve as a supply station when facing natural disasters such as earthquakes. Disaster-responsive vending machines are equipped with energy storage batteries and can operate even during power outages.
Retail value sales of vending continued to decline in Japan at the end of the review period, mainly due to the opportunities lost from business/office districts, as many companies maintained telecommuting during the prolonged impact of COVID-19. With fewer people venturing outside, there was less demand for on-the-go consumption, on which vending was highly reliant.
As the nature of vending machines is that they are accessible anywhere at any time, vending players are pushing the convenience concept even further by incorporating new technologies for payment. The ultimate goal of the purchasing experience is to be able to purchase products without any hassle, such as taking out a wallet and putting money in the machine.
In the review period, sustainability became a key component for businesses across various industries in Japan. Major companies are making efforts to set sustainability and goals and implementing initiatives to achieve them.
Before COVID-19 hit, Japan’s tourism industry was booming, with a growing number of inbound tourists visiting the country. Many tourists enjoyed the extensive number and types of vending machines in Japan, and vending machines were considered to be a unique shopping experience.
