In 2020, a high number of non-essential retail outlets, leisure and entertainment venues, as well as workplaces had to close during strict and extensive national lockdown periods, as authorities sought to curb the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) around the country. Therefore, many of the spaces where vending machines are located were either closed or neglected by consumers, who remained at home as much as possible to minimise contact with others and reduce the risk of infection.
In Italy, innovation within vending is becoming increasingly important, and new payment methods for the channel have been introduced, in particular with respect to contactless payments and payment via apps. Thus, vending players have been taking steps to implement contactless payments via apps and Bluetooth-connected devices, in order to reshape the offer with customisable, premium and advanced console products and better meet changing and more sophisticated consumer demands.
Vending machine technology is versatile and can be applied to the sale of various products and services. Some manufacturers have developed and launched innovative vending machines in Italy, such as the "automatic wine shop" by Magex Srl: a real vending machine that can dispense glass bottles of different sizes and formats, including magnums.
Over the forecast period, additional models and functions are expected to increase their presence within vending in Italy, such as new corporate welfare formats like refrigerated lockers for shopping and machines with ready meals. 24-hour self-service automatic retail stores are also set to enter the arena in the short to medium term.
In the aftermath of COVID-19, close attention to surface sanitation has become a priority, and it is expected to remain an important aspect over the forecast period. For this reason, manufacturers of vending technologies are integrating sanitation systems for vending machines to protect against viruses and bacteria, such as UV-C lamps that allow the compartment to be sanitised in coffee machines cup collection points after dispensing.
Although the outlook for vending in Italy is, generally, positive, there are a number of factors that have the potential to negatively impact sales in the category in the short to medium term. These include the proposed, but delayed, implementation of a “plastic tax” and a “sugar tax” in Italy.
