Prior to the onset of the pandemic, vending retail current value sales were already in decline, but COVID-19 served to exacerbate this trend. Restrictions on movement, particularly a sharp decline in inbound tourism, had a significant negative effect on vending during 2020, as many of these machines are located in transport hubs, such as train stations and airports.
Vending machines are also commonly found in such semi-captive environments as hospitals, factories, gyms and educational institutions. These locations saw a significant reduction in footfall during 2020 due to pandemic restrictions.
ThesGala-Pies Cooperative continued to dominate vending during 2021, accounting for just over two thirds of retail value sales. It sells milk, cheese and yoghurt in its vending machines.
There will be robust growth in vending retail current value sales throughout the forecast period. The proliferation of small retail stores that host multiple vending machines will be an important driver of this.
HotelVend is another new concept. Launched by GR Vending SA, its vending machines are positioned as replacing mini-bars in hotels, providing access to drinks, snacks and other products (such as tobacco products, beach goods, travel essentials and even souvenirs) 24-7.
GR Vending SA has launched a new concept – selling fresh fruit and vegetables through vending machines. However, to date, local consumer reaction to this concept has been rather indifferent.
