Having plunged by almost a fifth during 2020, vending retail current value sales recovered only marginally in 2021, as restrictions on movement were relaxed and local consumers spent less time at home and consumer foodservice outlets operated normally for most of the year. Vending was particularly hard hit by restrictions on movement during 2020.
Personal hygiene saw increased retail value sales through vending during both 2020 and 2021, benefitting from the pandemic. Since mid-2020, it has been obligatory to wear facemasks in indoor public spaces and crowded outdoor public spaces in Spain.
In light of the pandemic and growing consumer concern regarding the spread of COVID-19, vending companies have focused on innovation. Players have focused on improving technologies, formats, products, machines and management systems.
Vending retail current value sales will exhibit no more than marginal growth during the forecast period. A high percentage of public spaces in Spain are already covered by vending, leaving limited room to expand.
With local consumers increasingly focused on health and wellness, tobacco consumption is in decline in Spain. However, this trend will also provide a strong boost to dairy products and alternatives vending, which is currently negligible.
In the aftermath of the pandemic, many vending companies are working on mobile applications that allow consumers to connect to vending machines and place orders without ever physically touching the vending machine. Such innovations are likely to proliferate during the forecast period.
