Apart from predictions for a marginal drop in value sales (at constant 2022 prices) in 2023, a trend that is likely to impact many retail channels in Sweden as consumers prioritise their spending in line with expectations for an economic downturn, vending is set to return to a positive performance from 2024 onwards, with the return of more hectic lifestyles amongst many Swedes meaning that emergency purchases through vending machines will remain attractive. It also offers established retailers an alternative channel that offers greater convenience, such as IKEA’s launch of vending machines in its own stores.
Fresh, healthy and convenient food alternatives are predicted to be growth areas within vending over the forecast period. The health and wellness trend is set to gain further momentum in Sweden, which will see consumers increasingly seek and demand a wider variety of options from vending machines.
The level of technical innovation in general provides ample room for the future development of vending in Sweden, particularly in terms of digital payments, a trend which has gained strong momentum since the pandemic when consumers looked to avoid touching surfaces that may have come into contact with others. The provision of cashless payments will be vital to the survival of vending in the country.
