The current value performance of vending was negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Vending relies heavily on busy consumers looking for quick and convenient food and drinks options on-the-go.
Personal hygiene vending saw the best performance in vending in 2020 due to COVID-19, and it was one of the only categories to see growth in 2021. Even though face masks in Sweden were never obligatory and only recommended, their usage and the use of disinfecting gels increased strongly after COVID-19 hit the country.
Vending machines face high competition in Sweden from convenience stores, with many consumers placing greater trust in these outlets over using a machine, and even consumer foodservice outlets, where consumer have access to a wider product range, and good-quality takeaway coffee. Therefore, in order to avoid the frequent technical issues with vending machines, many people prefer to visit a store for their purchases.
With an increased share of people vaccinated, from the second half of 2021 more people have been moving around for work, shopping and entertainment purposes, which will bring more growth opportunities for the vending channel in the forecast period. Although vending will continue to account for just a small share of overall retail sales in Sweden, the return of more hectic lifestyles amongst many Swedes mean that emergency purchases through vending machines will remain attractive.
In response to COVID-19, the government and most retailers encouraged consumers to use contactless payments to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. With Sweden striving to become a cashless society even before COVID-19, the provision of cashless payments will be vital to the survival of vending in the country.
It is likely that more innovative solutions will be seen in the future, and interesting, healthier products. Companies are expected to focus more on providing healthy snacks which are fashionable and interesting, and which have long shelf lives.
