Growth for paediatric analgesics due to rising confidence amongst parents

In 2019, analgesics registered double-digit current value growth, with further progress expected over the forecast period. However, rising prices was the main factor boosting value sales, as volume sales declined in most categories.

Consumers favour safe and affordable products to deal with stressful lifestyles

Adult dipyrone and adult aspirin also performed well in current value terms in 2019, with the latter benefiting from increasing stress levels and urban lifestyles. Topical analgesics/anaesthetic also saw strong growth, thanks to increasing participation in sports, especially amongst men.

Value growth expected due to population and channel growth

The increasing number of chemists/pharmacies across the country, in tandem with growth in the population, is ensuring continued demand for analgesics in Uzbekistan. The government has paid attention to supporting socially vulnerable segments of the population.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Multinationals account for the majority of sales thanks to consumer trust

Despite favourable conditions for domestic companies, foreign multinationals continued to account for the majority of value sales within analgesics in 2019. GSK Consumer Healthcare took the lead from Radiks in 2019, with Radiks in second and Taisho Pharmaceutical Holdings entering in third, after taking over the leading Efferalgan brand from Bristol-Myers Squibb in 2019.

Uzbekistani companies will strengthen their positions due to government support

Despite the dominance of foreign players within analgesics, domestic producers are expected to strengthen their positions in the forecast period. Remedy Group, Uzkhimpharm and Radiks already offer various types of analgesics, which account for a reasonable share of retail value sales, and these are the largest Uzbekistani pharmaceutical companies in this category.

Affordable prices benefit local brands, but well-known foreign brands still preferred

Overall, the affordable prices of domestic producers may ultimately be to their benefit over foreign alternatives, given the ongoing price-sensitivity amongst consumers in the country. Nevertheless, the majority of people still currently trust long-standing and well-known foreign brands, especially as they are frequently advertised on Russian TV channels, which are regularly watched in Uzbekistan.
