Analgesics registered unprecedented value growth in 2020, as consumers stockpiled analgesics, particularly acetaminophen, at the start of the pandemic. In 2021, with COVID-19 still a threat, value growth is expected to be healthy, but nothing like the growth registered in 2020.
Sanofi-Aventis continues to have a strong lead in analgesics in 2021, though it is expected to lose slight value share. It offers the leading consumer health product, dipyrone Algopyrin, as well as the top two brands in analgesics, Algopyrin and leading ibuprofen brand Algoflex.
Paediatric analgesics is expected to register lower value growth. There are two factors behind this.
Analgesics will register healthy constant value growth over the forecast period. Due to busy lifestyles, when Hungarian consumers have minor injuries or pain, they usually prefer self-medicate and ease it immediately with OTC analgesics which are well-known from advertisements, rather than spending valuable time visiting a doctor.
While value growth is predicted to be healthy over the forecast period, there are potential threats. The pandemic will have a lasting impact and could dampen value sales somewhat.
Chemists/pharmacies are by far the leading channel, though e-commerce will gain value share over the forecast period. The pandemic accelerated the shift to online channels, as people were forced to shop online during lockdown, and this will continue over the forecast period and mainly through pharmacy websites.
