The development of a more restrictive attitude to diclofenac has taken another turn. In 2020, diclofenac in pill form was switched from OTC to Rx in Sweden.
Easy access to analgesics has not been without side effects in Sweden – the number of poisonings with OTC analgesics has increased. According to the Swedish Poisons Information Centre, in 2021, acetaminophen (paracetamol) was the medicine about which the centre received most questions from Swedish hospitals – 3,447 questions, far above the second one, more than twice the number relating to promethazine and more than four times the number relating to ibuprofen.
While analgesics is not a highly innovative category, there is still room for new launches and marketing for various needs, something which is likely to continue in the forecast period. While diclofenac is strong in topical analgesics, many consumers prefer herbal/traditional alternatives.

Analgesics
Analgesics cover systemic and topical pain relievers. Products which include a pain-relief ingredient in addition to another core function are excluded (e.g. a sore throat remedy which includes paracetamol is excluded from the analgesics and instead is included in pharyngeal remedies).
