Apparel accessories registered gradual improvement in Hungary. The importance of the category increased in line with growing competition.
Each category within apparel accessories registered positive current retail value growth in 2017 thanks partly to growing demand, which boosted retail volume sales. In addition, current retail value growth was also helped by growth in unit prices.
The success of apparel accessories was due partly to the different quality and price ranges available in Hungary, from luxury items to economy and/or private label brands. Similarly to other apparel categories, in the case of accessories the newest collections were usually rolled out initially by producers of well-known brands.
International manufacturers and brands continued to dominate apparel accessories in 2017. Most consumers purchase the category’s products in stores operated by fast fashion chains and private label producers, through which a wide selection of products is available.
Manufacturers had different strategies for advertising their apparel accessories products. Some did not invest significantly in promotions and campaigns but instead used in-store promotion and placed accessories at selected spots in stores for upselling purposes.
Apparel accessories were available through several distribution channels in 2017. The number of store types that specialised solely in these products was relatively low as a result of strong competition, which forced players to expand their product portfolios.
