While the COVID-19 pandemic has had little impact on demand for dairy and alternatives, not least due to the effective management of the spread of the COVID-19 virus in Ethiopia, widespread civil unrest marred Ethiopian society for much of 2021 and 2022, disrupting supply chains and putting pressure on the ability of many consumers to afford to purchase dairy and alternatives on a regular basis. In addition, the rapidly increasing oil and fuel prices are also placing pressure on the industry as well as consumer household incomes.
Due to the political and social issues that continue to plague Ethiopia and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, during 2022 the country’s marketplaces were not as vibrant as they ordinarily would be. This suppressed economic activity has definitely had a negative impact on sales of dairy products and alternatives.
Ethiopia is experiencing a growing demand for dairy products. However, as a developing country, a large part of the residents do not have access to dairy products, primarily due to both limited financial resources and availability.
In February 2022, inflation reached 33.6% while food inflation stood at 41.
Traditional grocery retailers, mainly open markets, remains the main source of both fresh food and packaged food for the vast majority of consumers and these are often the only food retail channels present in rural areas of the country. In urban areas, independent small grocers are also very common and many people purchase baby food, as well as a wider range of products such as confectionery, rice, pasta and shelf stable processed fruit and vegetables and meat and seafood from these outlets.
Over the forecast period, while dairy products will continue to see growth, the industry will continue to be dampened by the ongoing economic downturn caused by the pandemic, the conflict in Ethiopia, and the worldwide increasing oil and fuel prices. Meanwhile, seasonal based demand and weak market infrastructure will also continue to present challenges for the industry.
