Students and working professionals are the heaviest users of hosiery in Thailand. All school pupils and many university students must adhere to strict dress codes and this requires plainly patterned hosiery in white or brown to match with their uniforms.
As well as impacting the economy, the closure of the Thailand’s borders also had a more direct impact on sales of hosiery in 2020. On one hand, with inbound arrivals plummeting manufacturers lost a key consumer base.
Non-sheer hosiery posted stronger growth than sheer hosiery during the review period, partially due to rising demand among athletes and sports enthusiasts and partially due to the relentless rise of the athleisure trend and strong growth in demand for sportswear. The popularity of sports hosiery is rising among the increasing numbers of Thai people who exercise regularly, with running, cycling and working out in fitness centres and gymnasiums among the most common activities.
The rising interest of Thai consumers in sportswear and high demand for sports footwear and thus for socks is set to continue supporting sales growth in non-sheer hosiery during the forecast period. This should benefit sportswear brands such as Nike and adidas, which were posting solid gains prior to COVID-19.
Hosiery in Thailand is expected to become even more fragmented, with a large number of unbranded local products and imported ones from China and overseas becoming available. Hosiery is the apparel and footwear category with the largest share of unbranded items, the popularity of which is due primarily to their more affordable prices.
Given the important role of schools and offices in the sale of hosiery in Thailand, it is clear that as the country adjusts to the new normal sales of hosiery should recover. The demand for school footwear and thus hosiery is unlikely to diminish, albeit the shrinking school-age population will impede sales to an extent.
