As in other apparel categories, sales of hosiery were negatively impacted by home seclusion and the temporary closure of retail stores due to COVID-19 in 2020. Many consumers did not socialise as they normally would, reducing demand for hosiery products.
Non-sheer hosiery continued to dominate hosiery in 2020 as it has a wider consumer base of both male and female consumers, while sheer hosiery is only associated with women. Non-sheer hosiery has also become increasingly popular with women due to the popularity of casual and sports-inspired apparel and jeans.
Consumers continued to prioritise affordable hosiery products in 2020, including private label and domestic brands. Price remained a key factor in purchasing decisions as, in contrast to outerwear, there is little interest in expensive items.
Hosiery is expected to return to positive retail value growth at constant 2020 prices in 2021, benefiting from an anticipated economic recovery. Growth is expected to continue over the longer term with a positive outlook for the end of the forecast period, when per capita sales of hosiery are set to peak as income levels are at their highest.
Non-sheer hosiery is expected to remain by far the dominant category in both retail value and volume terms, reflecting its convenience as a product type. However, sheer hosiery, having seen a sharper decline in 2020, is expected to record higher retail value growth at constant 2020 prices over the forecast period, especially as consumers economise less due to rising incomes.
Over the forecast period, consumers are expected to purchase hosiery more regularly via the e-commerce channel, aided by further growth in the number of online retailers. Online growth will also benefit from the fact that hosiery does not need to be tried on, unlike some other apparel types where the desire to try products on can limit e-commerce growth.
