In 2021, as in 2020, the primary factor affecting hosiery was the ongoing channel shift from physical retailing towards e-commerce. COVID-19 helped to fuel a trend where consumers shied away from physical retail stores for safety reasons and moved towards online channels.
Non-sheer hosiery remains a product type consumed more out of necessity than it is driven by short-term fashion trends. Commonly displayed in mixed retail stores, near checkout counters in department stores or co-marketed with other goods online, the category also benefits from impulse buying.
Low-cost apparel giant Lindex Sverige continued to lead hosiery in value terms in 2021, and although it lost slight share, it remained higher than the pre-pandemic level thanks to a significant increase in 2020. It also remained the only player to hold a double-digit value share.
Consolidation, which is expected to have significant effects on the rest of the apparel category, is expected to have only marginal effects on the value growth and size of hosiery. Consumption of hosiery is primarily driven by necessity, long-term fashion trends and demographics, meaning consolidation amongst apparel players is not likely to have any significant impact on future developments.
Hosiery is commonly sold through a multitude of different channels, including both specialist and general goods retailers, and through a number of channels not as affected by apparel market trends. With hosiery being a traditional, easily-stocked, common product which is not particularly affected by fashion as there is little room for renewal or innovation, this situation is not likely to change.
Swedish purchasing patterns are increasingly characterised by a paradoxical combination of demand for higher-quality, sustainably produced goods, paired with growing price sensitivity and a shift towards faster and cheaper e-commerce. Therefore, traditional hosiery sales may come under growing pressure during the forecast period.
