Street stalls/kiosks benefitted from the favourable macroeconomy, recording further sales growth in 2018. Chained street stalls/kiosks and independents contributed in equal measure to overall growth.
Another factor generating renewed enthusiasm for (independent) street stalls/kiosks is the increasing number of food truck festivals, where food truck owners can temporarily set up shop to sell their products. This highlights the growing appeal of food trucks, particularly amongst educated young urban consumers actively seeking new types of fast food.
Over the past few years, the Netherlands has witnessed a surge in food courts, food halls and market halls. This trend has been mainly concentrated in the country’s largest cities.
The chained segment in street stalls/kiosks remained weak in 2018, with NS Stations Retailbedrijf, the retail division of publicly owned Nederlandse Spoorwegen (the main passenger railway operator and owner of all railway stations in the Netherlands), still the only chained player in the Dutch market. There are currently no prospects of any other chains emerging over the next few years.
NS Stations Retailbedrijf’s scaling back of its foodservice activities has cast doubts on the long-term growth prospects of its two street stalls/kiosks brands, Julia’s and Kiosk, which are the only chained brands in the Netherlands. Both Julia’s and Kiosk have seen their outlet network stagnate over the past three years.
Whilst in terms of outlets chained players remain fairly small compared to independents, they account for nearly half of the value sales. This points to the relative feebleness of independent operators.
