In 2019, volume growth continued to decline in every category of in-car entertainment in the Czech Republic. Ongoing and increasing use of smartphone navigation apps continued to impede volume growth of in-car navigation and improved quality of built-in speakers in new cars reduced demand for in-car speakers for the second consecutive year.
The long-term decline in-car navigation deepened in 2019, as consumers continued to prefer using popular free navigations apps like Google Maps, Sync and Weez on their smartphones. To compete with app-enabled smartphones, the major in-car navigation manufacturers with means continued to add features using higher technology such as Bluetooth connectivity, voice commands, advanced driver assistance features and geo-based recommendations – all on a large HD display.
Although factory-installed in-dash media players have become increasingly commonplace and continue to threaten category growth, Pioneer Electronics and Boss Audio Systems introduced new-generation in-dash media player products to Czech consumers towards the end of 2018 that are generating excitement and promise to boost volume sales in this category. Both players have developed multitasking smart media platforms that work with Amazon Alexa to offer better in-car entertainment and more.
In 2019, well-established rival Garmin and innovative Taiwanese brand Mio both saw higher volume share increases than TomTom, but TomTom maintained its lead within in-car navigation. In the world of GPS and in-car navigation systems TomTom was the pioneer, and it was the first in-car navigation system available to Czech consumers.
Garmin, the second-ranked in-car navigation system supplier, registered a slightly higher volume share increase than that of TomTom in 2019. Although Garmin’s volume growth also declined over the year, the decline was not as severe as it was for TomTom and others.
Mio Technology, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, saw the smallest volume growth decline and overtook Dynavix to rank third in 2019. The company offers a broad range of navigation systems and devices including not just in-car navigation but also truck and cycling navigation systems under the Mio brand.
