Men in the UAE typically maintain caution in their spending, however over the review period menswear and men’s footwear benefitted from the need to look good in social surroundings and professional at work. This need was significantly decreased in 2020, with apparel such as swimwear, formalwear, and occasion wear being amongst the worst hit, due to COVID-19 social distancing measures and lockdowns.
Over the review period, other men’s outerwear and standard jeans were among the most popular apparel items within menswear, reflecting the interest in Western fashion trends. Men’s preference for clothing made from natural materials, such as cotton, also continued to increase, as these materials are comfortable and are linked to good quality.
Despite a difficult year and a double digit decrease in sales, Landmark Group will continue to lead menswear in 2020 and even increase its category share. The company owns several well-known mid-range brands, including Splash, Max, Iconic and New Look, which benefit from familiarity and budget-friendly apparel options.
The demand for affordable, high-quality footwear and apparel is expected to increase over the forecast period as offices reopen and consumers return to work. Formalwear and suits particularly, which will see steeply decreased sales in 2020, are likely to see a strong revival of demand.
Given the triple-digit growth of apparel sales via e-commerce in 2020, it is expected that that companies will continue developing their marketing campaigns online and re-evaluate the performance of in-store retailing channels that are not meeting set targets. Even pre-pandemic, fewer shoppers were entering shopping malls, and Inditex supplies to stores in Dubai Mall for all brands had shrunk significantly in comparison with earlier in the review period.
Although thobes are purchased and worn less frequently among the young generation, demand for this apparel is expected to continue growing as the employment rates among Emiratis increases post-pandemic. Thobes will continue to benefit from being the official/ national wear in the UAE.
