Menswear saw slow but stable retail volume growth rates and higher current value increases during most of the review period. However, with the arrival of COVID-19 in the country in the first quarter of 2020, and its impact throughout the rest of the year, the category turned to significant decline in 2020 overall, seeing an even stronger decline than womenswear.
However, different impacts were seen by different categories. For instance, as in womenswear, the worst performances were seen by men’s swimwear and men’s suits.
As in womenswear, e-commerce saw a strong increase in its share of distribution in menswear in 2020, as consumers could shop online and have their order delivered to their home in safety during the COVID-19 lockdown. However, despite this growth, it was not enough to counteract the losses of store-based retail outlets.
As COVID-19 is expected to have less of a disruptive impact on store-based retailing in 2021, and as consumers regain confidence when vaccines start to be rolled out from the beginning of the year, sales of menswear are forecast to rebound in 2021 due to pent-up demand. However, whilst retail volume sales are set to return almost to the 2019 level of sales in 2021, current value sales are expected to take longer to recover, mainly due to the stronger decline in 2020 due to price reductions to try and shift stock.
Men’s jeans remained the largest category within men’s outerwear in 2020, and this is expected to continue in the forecast period, quickly returning to the former level of sales and showing further dynamic retail volume and current value growth. Jeans are considered a staple wardrobe item, as they can be dressed up or down to offer a number of different outfits, and can be worn on many occasions, whilst they are also resistant, comfortable and fashionable.
Due to the massive growth seen in e-commerce in 2020 due to COVID-19, new players are expected to join the online space, or to change their current e-commerce stores from internationally to locally managed. Not all e-commerce stores available in Mexico ship from Mexico, but as e-commerce has gained relevance for them as a result of COVID-19, more companies are expected to start to manage their operations and shipments from Mexico.
