Whilst menswear will see a drop in sales in 2020, the impact of COVID-19 has been very limited in comparison with other countries. There is a general casualwear trend throughout Taiwan, with consumers starting to wear casual apparel and footwear everywhere. This is the case even in offices, where the dress code has become less formal for many; aside from some professions such as bankers and consultants, not many people wear men’s suits to work anymore.
Uniqlo will remain the best-selling menswear brand in Taiwan, offering basic, comfortable, and affordable clothing for men. Other fast-fashion retailers, including Zara, H&M and NET, also offer a variety of fashionable men’s items at affordable prices.
Streetwear styles and brands are becoming increasingly popular among Taiwan’s younger male generation with the trend set to continue into the forecast period. Unlike women, who are willing to pay more for designer brands, young men have shown a willingness to spend more on streetwear brands.
Over the forecast period, male consumers are expected to continue showing a preference for simple and back-to-basics apparel. Classic items like t-shirts and jeans are still the main choices for menswear.
The oversized style is set to continue trending in menswear in the coming years as consumers increasingly opt for comfortable apparel over formal wear, particularly as office dress codes continue to relax. Cargo pants will continue to see rising popularity, influenced by the growing influence of the Japanese Yama style on Taiwanese men’s fashion.
