In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, menswear has been more severely impacted than womenswear as current value sales decline even more so. Women are usually more passionate about shopping than men and enjoy spending more time searching for new purchases, meaning they have been more likely to continue shopping during the pandemic.
Within menswear, the most negatively impacted product areas are the ones related to formal wear such as men’s suits and men’s shirts. As many Romanians have been remote working since the outbreak of the virus, there has been a significant decline for such items as men no longer require business type clothes for work and instead have preferred to wear comfortable clothes whilst on lockdown.
Prior to the pandemic, Romanian men were becoming increasingly interested in their appearance. However, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent rise in remote working, men have been favouring more casual outfits in 2020.
Given there is no second lockdown, and the Romanian government can control the crisis, menswear is expected to start recovering from as soon as 2021, as current value sales return to seeing growth. The easement of restrictions will be the main factor kickstarting the recovery process at the beginning of the forecast period.
Romanian men tend to have a very different shopping attitude than Romanian women. For example, many men prefer quality over quantity, and do not mind paying a higher price for a product that they know they will use frequently and only replace in a few years.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, e-commerce has increased its value share notably within menswear. Due to the closure of stores during the strict lockdown, men who still wanted to purchase items of clothing had no choice but to do so via e-commerce.
