The COVID-19 global pandemic has had a negative impact on an already struggling Nigerian economy, and disrupted the growth of consumer electronics in the country in 2020. This was due to a combination of factors, including supply chain issues and changing consumer requirements, as citizens were forced to increasingly adopt working from home practises, and drastically reduce time spent socialising.
A lockdown was declared by the President on 30 March, applying solely to three states: Lagos, Ogun, and FCT (Abuja). However, other states also implemented their own lockdowns, separate from the Presidential order, including Kaduna and Rivers.
Manufacturers such as LG and Transsion Holdings drive demand in the consumer electronics market, offering various models to meet the needs of every income group. Targeting low- and middle-income earners became particularly important due to the impact of COVID-19 on consumer purchasing power, which already faced limitations due to economic conditions.
The majority of sales of consumer electronics in Nigeria continued to occur through electronics and appliance specialist retailers in 2020. Unlike many countries, e-commerce remained very limited in Nigeria at the end of the review period, and even with the impact of COVID-19 saw a relatively small volume share gain in the distribution of consumer electronics.
