Overall demand for consumer electronics was down in Q2 compared to its stronger performance in 2019 for several reasons as lockdown measures were introduced in March in response to COVID-19 in Egypt. Increasing pressure on disposable incomes due to employment concerns resulted in greater discretionary spending, with many Egyptians prioritising essential goods and services including groceries and medicine.
Lockdown in Egypt started on 25 March, with a nightly curfew, although this was relaxed from 20:00hrs to 21:00hrs from the start of Ramadan. All borders were closed and flights suspended, with EgyptAir not resuming international flights until July.
An increasing number of consumer electronics producers had already begun to invest in manufacturing facilities in Egypt (rather than simply running assembly lines) in order to avoid import challenges which emerged over the review period, including rising tariffs which continued to drive up the average unit price of many devices. This included global players such as Samsung and LG Electronics in an attempt to maintain more competitive prices and supply volume in the market.
Lockdown measures introduced in March 2020 in response to the emergence of COVID-19 in Egypt included the closure of non-essential businesses including the largest distribution channel for consumer electronics, electronics and appliance specialist retailers. This scenario exacerbated a gradually declining trend for specialist retailers, which had already been losing volume share to hypermarkets, the latter of which offer consumer electronics sections in their large outlets, a convenient alternative to specialist retailers when consumer visit to do their grocery shopping.
While overall consumer electronics in Egypt is predicted to record marginal slowdown in demand in 2021 (driven by ongoing price sensitivity and surge in demand for certain products such as home video during lockdown) before regaining momentum from 2022 onwards, a number of major categories are predicted to continue to experience increasing retail volume sales from 2021, including laptops, smartphones, wireless speakers and the smaller wearable electronics, as the country continues to move towards digitalisation, supported by the National Sustainable Development Strategy Egypt - 2030 which aims to create a digital society and build a strong digital economy. Egypt has favourable demographics for the further development of this market with 61% of the population aged below 30 years and around two million entering the market annually.
