Retail volume sales of imaging devices are in long-term decline in Spain. Increasingly ubiquitous, smartphones are used by a growing number of local consumers for taking photos and recording video.
In digital cameras, compact system models are steadily gaining volume share from SLRs and fixed lens products. Portability is one of the main attractions of compact system cameras, which are lighter and less bulky than SLRs.
Imaging devices is relatively concentrated, with the top five players – Canon España SA, Finicon SA, Olympus Optical España SA, Sony España SA and Fujifilm España SA – set to account for more than 70% of retail volume sales in 2021. Canon will remain the clear leader.
The rate of decline in retail volume sales of imaging devices will accelerate once again during 2022. During the forecast period as a whole, retail volume sales will more than half.
While retail volume sales of digital camcorders will also continue to fall throughout the forecast period, this decline will be somewhat more modest than that of digital cameras. In particular, the ruggedness and shock resistance of action cameras gives them a distinct advantage over smartphones for some local consumers – particularly those interested in sporting activities.
In keeping with the trend observed throughout the review period, e-commerce will continue to grow in importance as a distribution channel in imaging devices over the course of the forecast period. Consumer appreciation for the wide range of choices, competitive offers and capacity for easy price comparison afforded by this channel has increased steadily in recent years, while concerns about fraud have diminished as Spaniards have become more comfortable with shopping online.
