PROSPECTS
Instant cameras and compact system cameras grow despite surge in smartphones

While the imaging devices category has been suffering for several years, due to the increased use of smartphones and their enhanced capabilities when it comes to taking pictures, two types of imaging devices are experiencing solid growth in Norway: instant cameras and compact system cameras. These two devices appeal to two different groups of customers in Norway.

While photo-sharing is common on social media, printed photographs remain highly popular

Even though the number of pictures taken by smartphones is higher than those taken by all other kinds of devices combined, the number of printed photos is growing. Many consumers are spending more on reproducing digital photographs to a physical format.

Despite rapid development of smartphones, new generations of photographers adopt digital cameras

Smartphones are increasingly replacing digital cameras, especially with the launch of flagship smartphone models with a pronounced focus on photograph quality, such as the Huawei P20 and P30 models. Smartphones have become the most commonly used device for picture taking in Norway.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Sony leads in imaging devices thanks to strong position in consolidated digital cameras

Sony maintained its leadership in imaging devices in 2019 thanks in the main to its innovation in digital cameras. This included its Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 VI model, which was crowned camera product of the year by the Norwegian trade association for consumer electronics in 2019.

Hype slows around digital action camcorders though GoPro maintains outright lead

Despite heavy advertising in Norway, GoPro is failing to grow its sales. This company is the leading player in digital camcorders, specifically due to its strength in action models designed for sports and outdoor usage.

Canon focuses on SLR cameras

Canon’s strength in digital cameras stems from its focus on SLR cameras, where accounts for double-digit volume share. This strong position is helping the player to grow, as the decrease in volume sales of SLR cameras is weaker than the volume decline for fixed lens and compact system cameras.
