Digital cameras benefited from a major technological shift during the review period, following Sony’s launch of its first full-frame mirrorless camera in 2013. Sony dominated this area for much of the review period and saw considerable success, with the absence of a mirror enabling the lens to be closer to the sensor and also enabling changes to camera settings to be seen in real time, in addition to offering 100% scene coverage in the viewfinder.
Fixed lens cameras continued to dominate volume sales in digital cameras at the end of the review period, way ahead of SLR and compact system cameras. This is mostly due to the fact that fixed lens cameras are cheaper and more widely available compared to higher-end cameras.
Over the forecast period, imaging devices is expected to decline overall. Both fixed lens cameras and digital cameras are set to be increasingly substituted by smartphone cameras.
Canon maintained its leading position in imaging devices in 2019, with this player accounting for over double the share of its closest competitor Sony. Canon, Sony and third-ranked Nikon however all gained share in the year, benefiting from their offer of mirrorless cameras.
Both Sony and Canon sought to increase their appeal to millennials and younger adults towards the end of the review period. These consumers tend to be heavily reliant on smartphones but many are also focused on image quality, making them an attractive prospect for imaging devices players.
Sony’s first-move advantage in mirrorless cameras continued to benefit the company at the end of the review period, with many viewing smaller players such as Nikon, Panasonic and Olympus as remaining one generation behind Sony in terms of innovation. However, these players also continue to invest heavily in research and development and are thus getting closer in terms of functionality.
