Executive Summary

Jan 2019
PROSPECTS
Upgrading outlets remains the key priority

Most supermarket outlets have been operating for many years at their given locations and these facilities need renovation and modernisation to keep pace with other modern grocery retailers, mostly discounters that were built in the 2000s. Retail operators that acquired their current supermarket outlets during the early 1990s are the most challenged in terms of investing in delayed upgrades.

Threat from other modern grocers maintains pressure on prices

Most supermarkets are within the catchment area of hypermarkets or discounters, which are often cheaper. Retail operators that have both hypermarkets and supermarkets have different portfolios of products for weekly sales but overlaps are significant, so loyal customers do not miss much during their weekly shop.

Supermarkets have the potential to get involved in food and drink internet retailing

Tesco, CBA and Auchan have their own food and drink internet retailing services, but CBA is the only one that relies on its supermarkets for home delivery. Other operators also have the potential to offer the service, especially those with a larger car park to host drivers who arrive to collect their orders.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Auchan engages in supermarkets with new outlets

Auchan Magyarország opened its first supermarket in the town of Szekszárd in 2017 by taking over a former Tesco outlet. There were two outlets opened during autumn 2018 in the towns of Gyor and Zalaegerszeg.

Some CBA supermarkets are sold to other modern grocery retailers

CBA Kereskedelmi, the third-largest supermarket retailer with a focus on Budapest and its wider catchment area, rents out some of its supermarkets to other grocery retailers. In particular, outlets in central Budapest are the most sought after due to good locations.

Lack of independent retail operators in supermarket retailing

Hungarian retail outlets operating as supermarkets belong to one of the main chains, either owned by the brand owner or run by franchise partners, but independent supermarkets do not exist and this is not expected to change over the forecast period. Launching and operating a supermarket requires way too much in terms of financial resources compared to a convenience store.
