While many Brazilians consume coffee several times a day, mainly at breakfast and lunch, they had only begun to show a greater interest in learning about the various types of roasts and flavours towards the end of the review period. This has helped to drive the consistently strong current value growth of specialist coffee shops, particularly independent operators in the country.
While eat-in continued to dominate value sales within cafés/bars in 2019, home delivery continued to gain ground. This trend is being supported by cafés and chained specialist coffee shops partnering third party delivery platforms such as Rappi, iFood and Uber Eats, with online ordering in particular helping to drive growth.
The dominant channel of bars/pubs continued to record slow current value growth in 2019, in addition to declining numbers of outlets. This trend has been mainly linked to deterioration in the labour market which has not recovered since the economic instability experienced in late 2014.
Cafés/bars remained a highly fragmented competitive landscape in 2019, dominated by independent operators. However, the channel was led by global chained brands such as McCafé, in addition to a strong representation of brands that have expanded over the years through franchising including Rei do Mate, Nosso Bar and Grão Espresso.
Leading chained café brand Rei do Mate, and chained specialist coffee shops Café do Ponto and Casa Pilão have all partnered e-commerce pioneer MercadoLibre to use its Mercado Pago digital wallet. This allows customers of these brands to pay for goods through QR code when visiting their stores, by informing the cashier that they wish to pay using this service.
Grupo CRM Industria & Comércio de Alimentos Ltda, which is the owner of traditional grocery retailer Kopenhagen in Brazil, has launched a café called Kop Koffee in Avenida Paulisa in São Paulo. This is an attempt by the player to diversify its operations, which is traditionally focused on chocolate confectionery, although it will continue to offer the latter in its new stores as a perfect accompaniment to its coffee.
