After seeing a significant current value decline in 2020, cafés/bars started to see recovery in 2021, despite the impact of restrictions imposed by the third and fourth waves of COVID-19. Whilst cafés could operate under restrictions by reducing their opening hours and the number of people inside or outside on the terrace, bars, clubs and nightclubs had to close during the periods of restrictions, which thus hampered the recovery of the overall channel in 2021.
Specialist coffee and tea shops saw the most dynamic current value performance in 2021, as a result of the dominant position of international and domestic chains that invested in expansion. Its strong growth also came from its small size, which creates higher growth potential, its operation in big cities, where the concept is increasingly accepted due to busier lifestyles, and the important role of takeaway.
5 to go dominated in terms of outlet numbers over the review period, and this remained the situation in 2021 due to the continuation of a high rate of new openings in 2020-2021. The chain is operated almost totally by franchised outlets.
In the early forecast period cafés/bars is expected to witness good current value growth, as restrictions will diminish due to a reduction in COVID-19 infections as more people are vaccinated. At the end of 2021, restrictions on attending cafés/bars were applied to unvaccinated individuals, which hampered the expected return to growth after the lockdown in 2021.
The forecast period is not expected to witness changes in the brand ranking in cafés/bars. Sustained by the master franchisee Amrest Coffee, Starbucks is expected to maintain the value leadership of cafés/bars.
Home delivery of coffee is expected to continue to develop, as it has now entered into everyday life for a large number of urban consumers. However, the share of home delivery within total sales is likely to remain low.
