South Korean cafés/bars have struggled to achieve growth, mainly due to the bars/pubs category. The prices of the traditional alcoholic drinks soju and local beer are rising in bars/pubs, leading to more consumers drinking at home instead.
New anti-graft legislation became effective in South Korea in 2016, which led to declining sales for bars/pubs, as drinking after dining was previously a very common practice when business partners got together in South Korea. In addition, the South Korean government has limited the working week to a maximum of 52 hours, so that employees can focus more on their own personal life, which has also led to a reduction in team dinner and drinking activities.
Specialist coffee shops showed the fastest growth in current value terms in 2018, of 8%, as drinking coffee became a daily routine in South Korea. Major branded chained specialists increased their value share through the development of new drinks menus, as well as food menus, in 2018.
Starbucks Coffee Korea Co Ltd has led cafés/bars in South Korea for many years, and continued to gain value share in 2018. Starbucks launched its premium speciality coffee outlets, named Starbucks Reserve, in South Korea in 2016, and it has rapidly expanded the number of Starbucks Reserve outlets since then.
Most local chained specialist coffee and tea shops operate using a franchising system. Operators are aggressively recruiting franchisees in South Korea to increase their outlet numbers.
While the bars/pubs category is declining, Hanshin Pocha has been able to achieve significant growth, thanks largely to its owner, Baek Jong-won, who is a well-known celebrity in the foodservice industry. The chain has been active in developing new menus with reasonably priced items, in the context of out-of-home drinking generally becoming more expensive in South Korea.
