Cafés/bars was heavily negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with bars/pubs being the category to suffer the most. Even in 2021, foodservice establishments had to remain closed until 16 May, when sales could only be offered by outlets with outdoor seating.
In order to reduce costs, cafés/bars undertook activities such as renegotiating rents for the period of restrictions, shortening the menu offer in order to reduce costs, or reducing their investment expenditure to a minimum. Independent players suffered more than their chained counterparts, due to their lower bargaining power.
Before the pandemic, home delivery services from specialist tea and coffee shops and cafés were scarce, due to concerns about the quality after delivery. Thus, the phenomenon of ordering coffee to be delivered was a novelty, with consumers increasingly able to order coffee via third party delivery providers such as Pyszne.
Cafés/bars was strongly negatively affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. Over the forecast period, players are expected to focus on maintaining liquidity and rebuilding their earnings to the pre-pandemic level.
The most popular places to buy coffee are specialist coffee and tea shops and cafés, which will help drive growth for cafés/bars in the forecast period. However, convenience stores limited-service restaurants, that is, points located in small local convenience stores such as Zabka, or in forecourt retailers, are expected to become increasingly strong competitors.
Cafés and specialist coffee and tea shops will seek to diversify their locations, with an emphasis on streets and housing estates. Costa Coffee, for example, has announced the expansion of mini-formats and drive-throughs in meeting places and travel destinations over the coming years.

Cafés/Bars
This category encompasses all establishments where the focus is on drinking (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages). While a wide variety of snacks and full meals are offered, it is not uncommon for consumers to only order a drink. As a general rule, establishments deriving 50% of their income or more from the sale of drinks are included here.
